Arts United Center

Preserving a Masterpiece

The Arts United Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana, is more than a cultural venue; it is a bold architectural landmark. For more than 50 years, this mid-century modern treasure—the only theater ever completed by architect Louis Kahn—has served as a community hub that fosters artistic collaboration across all backgrounds. After the “A Soaring Vision” renovation, focused on preservation, functionality, and accessibility, the Arts United Center reopened on October 25, 2025. The project elevated Kahn’s vision with modern technology and renewed performance capability.

Shared Vision

Arts United and Kotobuki Seating International partnered with a common goal: create a space built to last and serve generations. Both organizations understood the cultural importance of the Center as a pioneering community theater. This shared focus aligned every project partner—architects, consultants, and contractors—to shape a venue worthy of its history and purpose.

Advanced Seating

For this renovation, Kotobuki supplied 725 TSA-71 seats, selected for their design dignity, ergonomic performance, and inclusive features. The seat’s 3D ergonomic shape follows the natural curve of the spine, reducing fatigue during long performances. A waveform spring system, adapted from luxury automotive seating, helps maintain posture by supporting the pelvis and improving circulation.

A silent tip-up mechanism with a proprietary resin silencer prevents vibration and noise as seats rise, creating a distraction-free environment for audiences.

Accessibility and Design

Universal access remained a core priority. The seating system includes 10 pairs of ADA-compliant roll-away seats that allow wheelchair users to stay comfortably in their mobility devices. Eight ADA-compliant seats also include transfer arms that swing open, supporting safe movement from walkers or wheelchairs.

High-contrast label plates and their strategic placement improve readability, while aisle lights on the end panels support safe navigation in all lighting conditions. Aesthetics were equally important. All 725 seats feature custom gray upholstery selected to harmonize with the building’s architectural palette. Every detail—from cushion curvature to fabric choice—supports comfort and inclusion while enhancing the artistic experience.

A Renewed Future

The partnership between Arts United and Kotobuki Seating resulted in a renovated venue that honors its rich history while preparing it for the next century. The Arts United Center now stands ready to welcome future generations with comfort, accessibility, and renewed purpose.
