Renovating a Cultural Landmark
Oceanside Library has been a community hub for decades, evolving into a vibrant, forward-thinking institution. It supports research, education, social interaction, and cultural engagement for all ages. The newly renovated 48,000-square-foot facility, designed by MDA Design Group and H2M, emphasizes sustainability and universal design. Natural light and biophilic elements create a welcoming atmosphere while accommodating a variety of use styles, from individual study to collaborative work.
Open views, transparency, and abundant daylight foster connections and inclusion. The redesigned library includes a café, tech hub, podcast studio, STEM workshops, a demonstration kitchen, and craft areas. A state-of-the-art theater further enhances the facility, supporting the needs of over 25,000 registered users and the broader community.
Harmony in Design
MDA Design Group collaborated with theater planning consultant Theater Projects to create a theater space that balances visibility, comfort, and accessibility. Clean lines, light wood, and neutral tones maintain harmony with the library’s aesthetic. The theater serves as a community hub for performances, talks, screenings, and other events, celebrating local arts while complementing the library’s multi-use zones.
Elizabeth Martin, architect and principal of MDA Design Group, selected Kotobuki Seating’s “Crescendo” TS-11 after visiting their New York showroom. This seat met design criteria while offering superior comfort. Its backrest angles to fit the body, and its “Spacia” design reduces pressure on the knees, making it easier to sit and stand. Molded urethane and a wave spring evenly distribute body weight, ensuring comfort during long events.
Natural beech wood paneling and Cosmic Blue upholstery were chosen to integrate seamlessly with the theater’s interior. These features allowed MDA Design Group, H2M, and Theater Projects to optimize seating visibility, comfort, and accessibility.
Library Overview
Since opening in 1938, Oceanside Library has been a hub for learning, creativity, and community activity. Over the years, multiple renovations have modernized the space, but the latest expansion represents the library’s most extensive update. The new theater, with white oak walls and matching seating, complements the library’s biophilic design.
Since its grand opening in October 2024, which welcomed over 2,700 visitors, the library has seen record attendance. More than 1,000 people visit daily, reflecting the success of this transformative project.
